Angel’s Unattended

From our race in Memphis TN back in May.

We’ve just returned home after working at the ADRL race in Memphis TN. Saturday at chapel, Mike Fulfer (ADRL Chaplain) was talking about Hebrews 13:2.  He told us about a couple of experiences he’s had over the years that could easily be interpreted as entertaining angels.  It was a very interesting sermon.

Sunday morning, on our way home, we made an unscheduled stop at a truck plaza to service the motor home.  We had planned to make it almost home before flushing the sewer tanks in the coach at a rest area.  However, the ’smell’ from the black tank was more than a little overwhelming!

After taking care of that task and refueling the coach, we decided to treat ourselves to a late breakfast.  We had a great meal!    I paid the bill and we headed out to the motor home to get back on the road.  I was in the back taking care of some last minute items when a knock came at the door.  Joanne answered the door and found a scruffy young man who was very polite and pleasant.  He asked if he could speak to her husband.  I came up front and spoke with Him.  He asked me if I would buy his tools so he could get enough gas to get his brother and him home.  They had been working in Missouri spraying some type of sealant on metal buildings.  Unfortunately, the whole crew had just been laid off without pay.  They were about 100 miles from home and just needed enough fuel to make it the last leg.

Without hesitation (kind of unusual), I told him I didn’t want to buy his tools, but would be happy to fill his tank.  While we were standing at the pump he expressed how hungry they were and asked if we had any food.  I told him we did and would fix something for him and his brother.

Joanne worked on making a couple of sandwiches while I scurried around and grabbed a couple of bottles of water, 2 apples and 2 V-8 drinks.  I took those items out to the men and returned for the rest of the food.  When Jo finished the sandwiches, I took them out to the guys, handed them the food, shook their hands and blessed them.  I got back in the coach and we headed off for home.

As we pulled out of the plaza and on to the road, I looked in the parking lot and saw the car still sitting there.  I took one last look in my mirror as we drove down the road to the interstate to see if they were still at the truck stop.  The car was gone.  Even though I still had a clear view of the area they would need to travel to get to the interstate, they were nowhere in sight.  They were headed in the same direction as us, south on Mississippi 78.  It gave me, as my good friend Joe Sannutti would say, Holy Ghost bumps.  The young man had made it a point to tell me they would be heading in the same direction as us.

Joanne and I had already made a comment to each other about how the scripture from Mike’s sermon was running through our heads as we prepared the food for these guys.  I looked behind me for the next 20 miles expecting to see the car.  I never did. I started to sense we had just experienced something more than simply helping out 2 guys experiencing hard times.  I looked at her and said, “I think we just passed a test from God.  I believe those guys were angels.”  We never saw the car or the 2 men again.

Were these guys angels?  The bible has numerous examples of angels being sent to do God’s work on earth.  Does God send them to visit us today?  I have to say yes.  Just remember you never know when you may be entertaining angels.
